And Repeat.
20 September - 10 November 2019
Fremantle Arts Centre
Five artists occupied a constructed printmaking studio in the Kathleen O'Connor gallery over a period of five weeks alongside the 2019 Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award.
Each artist created an edition of works on paper. Using a wide variety of printmaking techniques (etching, woodblock printing, screen printing, digital printing and cyanotype prints) have been taking place for the public to see and engage with during the residency period. Bought together to produce a portfolio of printed works that unite their respective individual practices, placing them in conversation.
Each artist approaches printmaking from a distinct direction, formally trained in the discipline, working from a conceptual manipulation of the techniques, or approaching the medium processes with a permeable
definition. The resulting artworks take notes from tradition but form printed documents that speak to contemporary views on formal aesthetics, identity, agency in public space, forms of protest and commemoration.
And Repeat. was part live performance, part immersive installation. Through conversation, exchange, fine art printing, digital media and publication, audiences and artists alike will be provoked to consider the labour-intensiveness of printmaking processes and the role we each play in distributing printed material.
