Excessive Lighting
27 February - 8 March 2015
Free Range Gallery

Excessive Lighting was a collaborative project between myself and Emma Buswell exploring the proliferation of public lighting installations across Perth “City of Light”.

The exhibition at Free Range Gallery positioned itself as a response to its immediate location within, and recent lighting additions to local prominent architectural sites to Perth’s CBD. Aware of the phenomena of “Perthing” whereby architectural structures are lit by transitioning colour fields, Emma and I hope to unpack this trend in urban space design across our city.

Taking motivation from the release in June 2014, of a City of Perth lighting proposal to illuminate the outline of individual high-rise buildings with coloured LED lights, we explored both the absurdist ends that this trend could expand to encompass, as well as domestic-scale interactions with lighting installations providing a sensitive and humorous view of the way we see our city.
